A rare and beautifully preserved antique Japanese Hikeshi-Banten (Fireman's Jacket). This jacket is woven from repurposed cotton strips (saki-ori) and features dense sashiko stitching throughout. The tsutsugaki (hand painted design) is also quite unusual.

Fireman's jackets are reversible. Before fighting fires the jackets would be worn plain side out and drenched in water for added protection. After the fire the jacket would be reversed exposing the decorative images as a sign of celebration.
